San Rafael Swell, 10/17-18/03
Geologically, the San Rafael Swell is an anticline that begins just north of Hanksville, UT, and continues north for many miles. In numerous places it is split by narrow slot canyons that have been carved into wonderous shapes by the torrents of flash floods. On 10/17, we hiked up Little Wild Horse Canyon, and then traversed across the desert to Bell Canyon and returned down Bell to where the two canyons converge. I managed to restrain myself photographically, because I took numerous pictures of Little Wild Horse Canyon in June. In June, we also tried to do a loop down Chute Canyon and back by way of Crack Canyon, but were unable to find Crack Canyon from the south. So this time, on 10/18,we decided to hike down Crack from the north and return the same way. True to form, we began by hiking down the wrong canyon. But when we did find Crack, it was worth all the effort. It is like a rock fairyland. On this last day, only Tom Bartlett, Joe Cruz, Doug Eastcott, and John Pollock were left of our venerable SAMBA crew.
