Arizona Trail from Kentucky Camp
to the Wilderness Area
9/15/02
The shortest version of this ride is an 11 mile out and back. But the day was spectacular -- temperature in the 70's and not a cloud in the sky. So we just kept going, doing the longest possible version, which turned out to be 25 miles with 2300 feet of climbing. We spent 3 1/2 hours moving (according to the GPS), and almost as long (3 1/4 hous) standing still. Contributing to the latter was a leisurely lunch stop, two flats, and a broken chain. We also took lots of photo stops and enjoyed the scenery. Much of this ride is a singletrack following an old pipeline, originally used to carry water from a spring to a gold mine. It is narrow singletrack high up on the side of the hills, and the last part required great concentration. Combine that with the spectacular scenery and you have the recipe for disaster, but no one rode off the trail. There were a few close calls however. Also, everyone ran out of water before we got back to the vehicles. John Pollock refilled his Camelback out of a stream, and he is not sick yet!
