Middle March - Cochise Stronghold Loop
2/21/02
This was an exploratory ride in the Dragoons, by Tombstone. The participants were Tom Bartlett, Andrew Bryce, Jim Jorissen, and John Pollock. It turned out to be an expert level ride, and physically very strenuous. The ride starts on Middle March Pass at the SE corner of the Dragoons, by Tombstone. It climbs up Middle March Canyon, over a pass, and descends into Cochise Stronghold, where it intersects the east end of the Stronghold trail. It then rides west up over the pass in Cochise Stronghold, and descends to the west Stronghold, passing by Council Rocks (where Cochise held his war councils). The ride is only 16 miles long if you do it with a shuttle, but it climbs and descends 2200 feet on very rocky technical singletrack, and it took us 6 hours (although we were only moving for 3 hours).
The last half of the ride is the same as the Cochise Stronghold ride that we will do as a regular club ride.
