Bear Mesa Ride/Walk/Crawl, 4/13/03
Eleven hearty souls set out to ride Bear Mesa (high on the side of the Rincons, above Chiva Falls) by John's new route. Last year, there was considerable complaint, and the riders renamed it "John's Folly". But this year the riders never seriously considered laying John beside the trail and piling rocks on his body. There was some occasional grumbling about the Apache ant torture, but it never came to that. The climbs are brutal, and the descents almost as bad -- steep, loose, and rocky. Amazingly, nobody had a serious crash (as far as we know -- we aren't sure where Glen and Joe are). The ride was 18 miles long, with 2600 feet of very technical climbing, and 3600 feet of very technical descending.
